First Look: President Obama's Hoagie Luncheon For Congressional Leaders

White House releases photo from closed-press luncheon, which did little to end bipartisan squabbling...
The White House has newly released this behind-the-scenes photo of President Obama and Congressional leaders enjoying take-out hoagies during a closed-press luncheon in the Oval Office Private Dining Room on May 16th. With the President, clockwise from left, are Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

Designed to ease partisan squabbling, the luncheon--which included chips and cookies, too--included a discussion about the debt ceiling and what Congress can do to help small businesses.  But the casual luncheon has had little impact on the GOP leaders' public bashing of the President's economic policies. Just this morning, McConnell blasted the President's efforts during a speech on the Senate floor.

What the luncheon did do was create a healthy uptick in business for DC sandwich shop Taylor Gourmet, which provided the hoagies.  The President made a morning run to the 14th Street outlet to pick up sandwiches before the luncheon, spending $62.79. The four local outlets of the popular Philly-style sandwich purveyor have had a steady increase in business ever since.

The President ordered a 12-inch Spruce Street hoagie for himself, which has roast turkey, prosciutto, roasted red peppers and sharp provolone on house-made bread, Taylor co-owner Casey Patten told Obama Foodorama. The rest of the order included one 9th Street Italian; one Cherry Street; one Locust Street Expressway; one Arch Street, and one Philadelphia Landfill, all 12-inchers.

Info: The Taylor Gourmet the President visited is located at 1908 14th St. NW, Washington, DC, 20009. Phone: 202-588-7117.
