White House Launches Pinterest Account, Invites Pinners To Attend Special Holiday Social Event

Deadline to apply to attend is Sunday, December 9th at 5:00 PM ET...
The White House on Saturday announced its official Pinterest account, and invited avid Pinners to apply to attend a special White House Holiday Social on Monday, December 17th.  During the President's re-election campaign, Obama for America created a Pinterest, but the White House account on the rapidly growing social media site is a first; Pinterest made its debut appearance on ComScore's list of the Top 50 most-visited Web sites in the U.S. in September, with 25 million visitors.  The White House so far has one Pin--the invitation, above, featuring President and Mrs. Obama's official holiday card.  There are 3,153 followers as of this writing.

At the Holiday Social, "Pinners will be invited to check out the décor, meet with the people that helped transform the White House for the holidays, join us for a craft project — and share it all with the Pinterest community," wrote White House aide Kori Schulman.   The first White House Pinboards will posted on December 17th, she said:

"Let us know the kinds of things you’d like to see on the White House Pinterest account by leaving us comment on our first pin. We look forward to hearing from you (and meeting some of you) soon!"

Applications to attend must be submitted to the White House by Sunday, December 9th at 5:00 PM ET.  Guests must be over age 18, have valid government ID, and be capable of passing the standard White House security and background checks.   Invitations are non-transferable.  Guests must follow the White House Pinterest or other social media to be invited, and the application includes a 140-character statement about why you want to attend.  Notifications will be sent out "no later than Monday, December 10th, 2012," the White House said.

The White House has hosted social media events for State Dinner arrival ceremonies, a Tweetup for Let's Move!, and for tours of the First Lady's Kitchen Garden.  Guests are offered a very unique, behind-the-scenes experience.

"The holidays are an especially exciting time for the White House to start pinning," wrote Schulman.  "During the 2012 holiday season alone, more than 90,000 visitors will have the chance to tour the White House holiday decorations, all hung with care by a team of crafty staff and volunteers."

The President and Mrs. Obama are welcoming about 14,000 people for 24 different holiday dinners and receptions this season.  The savory dinner buffet menus includes recipes featured in the First Lady's Grammy-nominated book, American Grown.
