New Glarus Brewing Co. founder Deborah Carey represents successful small business owners...
If there was any doubt that President Obama loves craft beer, Deborah Carey, co-founder of Wisconsin's New Glarus Brewing Co., will be seated with First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday at the US Capitol for the State of the Union Address. Carey met with President Obama last November at the White House for a closed-press meeting with about fifteen other small business owners to discuss the impact of the fiscal cliff. Dr. Jill Biden will also be seated in the First Lady's Box with Mrs. Obama and and 23 other guests, each chosen to highlight an Administration initiative. Carey got her SOTU honor thanks to being a small business owner. She founded New Glarus with her husband Dan, a master brewer, and it now has 50
full-time employees, and "registered growth in profits of 123 percent
from 2007 to 2009, becoming Wisconsin’s number one micro-brewery
relative to sales volume," according to her White House bio. The craft brewery produces six beers year 'round, as well as
'seasonals' and a selection of 'surprises,' but the company only sells
in Wisconsin, according to the website.
After her White House meeting in November, Carey was pretty excited to discover that a Presidential gift bag she'd received contained bottles of the President's special White House homebrewed beer.
"I got beer!" Carey exclaimed to reporters as she left the meeting. "I got beer from the White House!"
Along with Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, Mrs. Obama's other guests include Haile Thomas, a 12-year-old-chef being honored as a champion of Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign; Kaitlin Roig, a first grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut; and 102-year-old Miami resident Desiline Victor, a Haitian immigrant who waited in line for hours to vote during the General Election last November. Gov. John Kitzhaber (D-OR), Apple CEO Tim Cook and Bobak Ferdowsi, the Flight
Director for the Mars Rover who is known as the 'NASA Mohawk Guy,'
thanks to his American flag-inspired hairstyle during the August
landing--a red-and blue-streaked mohawk
set off by white stars on the side of his head, will also be seated with the First Lady.
Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton and Nathaniel A. Pendleton Sr, parents of slain Chicago teen Hadiya Pendleton, will also join Mrs. Obama. The First Lady attended Hadiya's funeral in Chicago last Saturday. The full guest list.
